Nicotine-Free Pouches vs Nicotine Pouches: What Is the Difference?
Nicotine-free pouches and nicotine pouches are often sold side by side and can look almost identical in the can. Because of that, the two are regularly confused, and the search phrases used for them overlap.
This page compares the two categories on factual points only: what they contain, how they are labelled and how they are generally used. It does not compare effects, health outcomes or suitability for any purpose. It is general information for adult readers.
Short answer
- A nicotine pouch contains nicotine; a nicotine-free pouch is made without added nicotine and is labelled 0 mg.
- The format — a small pouch placed under the lip — can be very similar.
- Nicotine pouches are sold in nicotine strengths; nicotine-free pouches sit outside that scale.
- Some nicotine-free pouches contain caffeine, which is a separate ingredient from nicotine.
- Neither category is snus: snus is made from tobacco.
- Regulation differs by country and by product, so the two are not treated the same everywhere.
The main difference: nicotine content
The defining difference is a single ingredient. A nicotine pouch is designed to contain nicotine, and the amount is stated on the can. A nicotine-free pouch is designed without it: according to the product information, no nicotine is added, and the nicotine figure is 0 mg.
That one difference is the reason the two categories are named, labelled and often regulated differently. What 0 mg does and does not tell you is covered in more detail in what 0 mg means on a nicotine-free pouch.
Do they look and feel the same?
In format they can be very close. Both are portioned pouches with a fibre base, usually white, supplied in a round can and placed between the lip and the gum. Both are single-use and are removed and disposed of after use, and neither is meant to be chewed or swallowed.
A similar format does not mean a similar product. The contents differ, and so the two categories should not be described as giving the same effect or the same experience. With a nicotine-free pouch, what is described on the pack is flavour, moisture and the physical feel of the pouch; any other active ingredient is declared separately. Pouch size, moisture and flavour intensity also vary from brand to brand within each category.
How is strength shown?
Nicotine pouches are usually offered in several strengths. The figure is typically given in milligrams of nicotine per pouch, and many brands add their own scale of dots or words. Those brand scales are not standardised, so the milligram figure is the more comparable reference.
Nicotine-free pouches carry a 0 mg marking instead. That is not the weakest step on a nicotine scale; it means the nicotine figure is zero. Differences between nicotine-free products come from flavour, cooling agents, moisture and, in some products, caffeine.
Can nicotine-free pouches contain caffeine?
Yes, some do. Caffeine and nicotine are separate substances, so a 0 mg nicotine marking says nothing about caffeine. Some nicotine-free pouches have no added caffeine; functional products add it deliberately and state the amount, usually per pouch.
In the ILVS Zero range, Energy contains 75 mg of caffeine per pouch, while Aurora Mint, Spearmint and Blueberry have no added caffeine. Products containing caffeine are not recommended for children, for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for anyone sensitive to caffeine. Caffeine-free options are grouped on the caffeine-free nicotine-free pouches page.
Are either of them snus?
No. Snus is a traditional oral product made from tobacco. Nicotine pouches are generally tobacco-free products that contain nicotine; nicotine-free pouches contain neither tobacco nor nicotine. Calling either of them “snus” blurs a real difference in what the product is made of.
Phrases such as “nicotine-free snus” are used in search and conversation, but they are inexact for exactly this reason. “Nicotine-free pouch” or “0 mg pouch” describes the product more accurately. Snus is also regulated as a tobacco product and is subject to its own sales restrictions in parts of Europe, which is another reason the terms should not be mixed.
Ingredients and labelling
In both categories, ingredients are product-specific. A typical pouch combines a plant or cellulose fibre filler, flavourings, sweeteners and humectants; nicotine pouches add nicotine, and some nicotine-free pouches add caffeine. The only reliable source for a given product is its ingredient list and product information.
Labelling differs as well. Nicotine pouches carry a nicotine strength and, depending on the country, specific warnings. Nicotine-free pouches show 0 mg and, where relevant, a separate caffeine declaration and warnings. How each category is classified, sold and marketed depends on the country and on the product's composition, so there is no single rule that applies to both everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between nicotine pouches and nicotine-free pouches?
- Nicotine content. A nicotine pouch contains nicotine; a nicotine-free pouch is made without added nicotine and is labelled 0 mg.
- Do nicotine-free pouches have the same effect as nicotine pouches?
- They should not be described that way. The format can be similar, but the contents differ, so the products are not interchangeable in what they contain.
- Can a nicotine-free pouch contain caffeine?
- Some do. Caffeine is a separate ingredient and is declared separately, usually per pouch.
- Is either product snus?
- No. Snus is made from tobacco. Neither nicotine-free pouches nor typical nicotine pouches are snus.
- Are both categories regulated the same way?
- No single rule applies everywhere. Classification and regulation depend on the country and on the product's composition.
This article is general information about the two product categories (as of 29 September 2026). The composition, instructions and warnings for any individual product are always found on its own packaging.
